Investigation into mass prisoner assault underway
More than 35 prisoners were sent to hospital from the Krugersdorp Correctional facility with injuries.
PRETORIA - Correctional Services have confirmed it's investigating allegations of a mass assault on more than 30 awaiting trial prisoners at the Krugersdorp Correctional facility.
The incident allegedly took place two weeks ago after inmates repeatedly complained to management about sewage flowing into their cell.
The father of an awaiting trial inmate said his son and others has complained for three consecutive days about a blocked drain that was spilling sewage into their cell.
He claimed management called plumbers to fix the problem, but then later accused the inmates of purposely blocking the pipes.
The father said the inmates were then severely assaulted and later told to go see the doctor.
"In that cell they sit in 39 inmates, the next morning 36 of that 39 were told to go to the hospital and go see the doctor."
Correctional Services said some inmates complained of assault however they're investigating allegations that more were injured.
