Operation Tornado: Police recover 24 stolen vehicles
‘Backyard’ panel beaters, chop shops, tow-truck operators and mechanical shops were targeted with 39 arrested.
JOHANNESBURG - Police have arrested 39 people across the country and have recovered 24 stolen vehicles during the weekend launch of Operation Tornado across all nine provinces.
The Crime Intelligence Unit, the Flying Squad, the Dog Unit as well as detectives and vehicle investigation services targeted 'backyard' panel beaters, chop shops, tow-truck operators and mechanical shops.
Police will now analyse the evidence recovered during the operation to gain insight into which cars are being targeted the most in order to warn citizens.
The police's Vish Naidoo said, "In one particular places in Port Elizabeth they also recovered police uniforms which we believe may have been used to hijack vehicles by people impersonating police officers."
He says this operation will continue and intensify.
