JOHANNESBURG -The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has said investigation into top executive Joseph Phungula's PhD qualification is still underway and could not confirm a _Sunday Times _report that he's been forced to resign because he lied about his Doctorate.

Just last month the parastatal's chief engineer resigned after he failed to produce proof of a qualification he claimed he had.

Prasa's Sipho Sithole said Phungula has resigned but the circumstances around this is not known.

He said the parastatal is still investigating whether he lied to his bosses about his PhD or not.

"There's a still a lot of outstanding deliverables on his part, including the investigation itself."

Meanwhile the Sunday Times is quoting chairman Popo Molefe as saying Prasa will turn to the courts to recover the money Phungula earned using his fake qualification.

Phungula is still serving his notice and the board has not accepted his resignation.
