JOHANNESBURG - Major construction work on Johannesburg's roads and bridges is expected to cause more traffic congestion for at least 18 months.

The multimillion rand project will see the refurbishment and maintenance on developments in the city, starting next month.

Some of the major projects will take place on bridges on the M1 highway.

The Joburg Roads Agency's Mpho Kau said this means motorists will have to seek alternative means of transport during certain periods while the work is being done.

"It would definitely cause congestion and that's why we're encouraging motorists to consider using available public transport where possible and the outcomes of the inspections identified venues that required rehabilitation work to be done on them."
