NEW YORK - Jon Stewart has said goodbye to The Daily Show after 16 years as host of the satirical Comedy Central series.

Stewart announced earlier this year that he would be moving on from the show.

South Africa's Trevor Noah will take over next month.

Colleagues and correspondence from Stewart's 16-year career as The Daily Show host paid tribute to the comedian, from Stephen Colberg to Steve Carrell.

Noah, who will start on 28 September, made a brief appearance.

The South African incoming host played up his premature entrance by pretending to measure the seat he will soon be occupying.

Stewart is being credited with turning a small time show into power, cultural platform.

Twitter reaction:

"Nothing ends. It's just a pause in the conversation." -Jon Stewart, on not saying goodbye
