'Hospital managers must restore confidence in health sector'
MEC Qedani Mahlangu said the way Tembisa Hospital was being managed was compromising service delivery.
JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu said all managers at hospitals across the province have a responsibility to ensure that they restore confidence in the health sector.
After numerous complaints by members of the public and staff, Mahlangu has decided to redeploy the CEO of the Tembisa Hospital.
The MEC made a surprise oversight inspection to the hospital on Wednesday and said the manner in which she found the institution was unacceptable.
Mahlangu said she found the way Tembisa Hospital was being managed was compromising service delivery.
"Tembisa was no longer run by a team and the CEO is no longer able to work with the collective in the hospital."
Mahlangu said the hospital's CEO, Daizy Pakane, has been put on special leave for a week before being redeployed.
Earlier this week the department publicly apologised to the family of a woman who was apparently refused medical assistance by nurses at the hospital.
Dr Barbara-Ann Ribeiro has been appointed as acting CEO.
