Sadag firmly against legalisation of nyaope
A University of Pretoria professor has called for nyaope to be legalised.
CAPE TOWN - The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) group says it's firmly against the legalisation of nyaope.
The drug is made up of a highly addictive mixture of heroin, dagga and rat poison.
It's reacted to comments made by Professor Jannie Hugo from the Department of Family Health at the University of Pretoria, who has been speaking at a conference on the effects of substance abuse.
He's called for nyaope to be legalised.
But Sadag's Dr Eugene Allers says that's not the way to tackle the problem.
"What we would rather advocate is for drug usage and drug abusers… the dependency and addiction to it should be decriminalised; so the selling and transport is still criminal."
