Silver medals for SA's swimming golden boys
Cameron van der Burgh and Chad le Clos took second place in their respective Fina World Champ events.
JOHANNESBURG - It was a silver afternoon for Chad le Clos and Cameron van der Burgh at the Fina World Championships in Kazan, Russia on Wednesday.
Swimming in the men's 200m butterfly final, le Clos got off to a fantastic start but found himself as far back as fourth during the final lap, with Hungarian László Cseh holding onto a healthy lead.
The South African Olympic champion pulled off a trademark late surge and threatened to grab the win, but left it just too late to finish in second place in a time of 1:53:68, two tenths of a second slower than Cseh.
Minutes later and van der Burgh was up against British rival Adam Peaty in the men's 50m breaststroke final.
Van der Burgh had broken his own world record in the event during Tuesday's heats, only to see Peaty swim even faster during the evening semi-finals.
Van der Burgh took an early lead in the final, but in a carbon copy of the 100m final days earlier, Peaty stormed back to touch the wall first in a time of 26:51, relegating van der Burgh to second place with a time of 26:66.
