JOHANNESBURG - South African Airways (SAA) said a process is now underway to recruit a permanent chief executive at the struggling national airliner.

It confirmed the appointment of Human Resources Manager Thuli Mpshe as the new acting CEO following Nico Bezuidenhout's return to low cost airline Mango last week.

SAA has battled management and cash problems for several years now, but has maintained it's not in crisis.

The national carrier said its board has approved the terms of reference for the appointment of a permanent CEO and once chosen, the preferred candidate's name will be presented to Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene.

However, they've not given an indication of how long this process will take.

SAA Spokesperson Tlali Tlali said, "To put out the time frames could really put everybody under undue and unnecessary pressure. However, the matter is being taken in a very serious light and will be expedited."
