JOHANNESBURG - Two suspected car hijackers have been shot and wounded after pointing a firearm at a police vehicle in Alexandra last night.

Police had been following the tracker signal from a stolen car and noticed the two suspects as they approached.

The police's Lungelo Dlamini says the men were wounded in their lower bodies and will appear in court soon.

"Both suspects were wounded in their lower bodies and they've been taken to the hospital. They've been put under guard and they'll be charged with theft of motor vehicle, attempted murder as well as possession of unlicensed firearm.

"They had given five shots but they pointed a firearm at the police and then police fired shots at them."

This is by far the one incident where police were not injured while carrying out the operation.

Several police officers across the country have been attacked and some killed while on duty.

The National Commissioner of Police, Riah Phiyega and President Jacob Zuma have both come out to condemn police killings.
