WC govt allocates budget for new Manenberg hospital
Helen Zille says they're in the process of finding a site in Manenberg for a new regional hospital.
Zille and Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille have met with the Manenberg Steering committee about proposed development plans for the gang-ridden suburb.
Two weeks ago the Western Cape government, together with the City of Cape Town, announced plans to re-design Manenberg.
Zille says they're in the process of finding a site in Manenberg for a new regional hospital.
"During this particular financial year there is no budget but this financial year ends in April next year and by that stage, we will probably have located the site."
GF Jooste was decommissioned last year, with the Provincial Government planning to build a new facility at a cost of R785 million.
It was hoped the hospital would reopen in 2019.
Last month provincial government approved a proposal to construct a regional hospital, at an estimated cost of R3 billion, instead of a smaller, district facility.
Zille however says more hospitals will not solve the gang conflict, which is the root cause of many emergency trauma situations.
