Solidarity urges Amcu to consider wage offer
Solidarity says it will encourage its members to accept the latest wage offer in the gold sector.
JOHANNESBURG - Trade union Solidarity has called on Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) to seriously consider accepting a six percent wage hike offer in the gold sector, warning that strike action would cripple the industry.
Talks over wages with five gold companies have continued for two months now, with Amcu walking out, and the National Union of Mineworkers (Num) describing the companies offers as weak.
Solidarity has also criticised the latest offer, but says it will encourage its members to accept it to avoid a strike.
Solidarity's Gideon du Plessis says, "We would also call upon Amcu to seriously consider this offer. There are weaknesses in it, but at this stage the mining industry is shrinking."
Amcu has not yet been available for comment.
