‘I warned my daughter not to date DJ Donald’
Elizabeth Marawa told the court she was against her daughter becoming romantically involved with Sebolai.
JOHANNESBURG - The mother of a woman who was allegedly killed by former Jozi FM DJ, Donald Sebolai, has told the High Court sitting in Palm Ridge, that she had warned her daughter not to date him just days before she was murdered.
Elizabeth Marawa has told the court she was against her daughter becoming romantically involved with Sebolai because he was disrespectful towards her.
Sebolai, popularly known as DJ Donald Duck, allegedly stabbed Rachel 'Dolly' Tshabalala to death in Soweto in June last year.
Her body was found in her flat.
Marawa recalls the first time she met Sebolai in June last year, the same month that Tshabalala's body was discovered in her flat.
She says Sebolai and Tshabalala had an argument in her house and claims the former DJ poured milk over her daughter.
Marawa says she recalls hearing Tshabalala telling Sebolai that "he can kill her if he wants to."
Although she's not clear about why the couple were arguing, she told Tshabalala that Sebolai was not the man for her.
The state's third witness, Constable Joyce Mofokeng, also testified how she and a colleague found Tshabalala's car abandoned after it was reported stolen by her family.
Mofokeng told the court that she found a sharp steak knife in the cubbyhole of Tshabalala's car.
She also says she found bloodied clothes near the rear window of the vehicle.
The court also heard how Tshabalala opened a case of assault against Sebolai twice before she was killed.
Palesa Sesedi, who is a friend of the couple, gave details about their relationship, saying Tshabalala would confide in her often about her relationship with Sebolia.
She says Tshabalala would tell her about how she felt emotionally abused and wanted to leave him.
She referred to two specific incidents where the 32-year-old mother was bruised after she was allegedly attacked by the accused.
Sesedi says every time Tshabalala would open a case against Sebolia he would apologise and she would then withdraw the charges.
Meanwhile, Sebolai has pleaded not guilty to murdering his girlfriend.
He claimed he and Tshabalala had an argument and he was trying to disarm her when she was stabbed.
Police say Sebolai confessed in a phone call to a friend to killing the 32-year-old woman.
The DJ was on the run for over a week after he fled with Tshabalala's car shortly after the attack.
He also faces charges of theft and defeating the ends of justice.
The trial has been adjourned until tomorrow.
