'Mining job cuts will worsen SA's struggling economy'
The ANC says mining companies must work with govt and review its plans before cutting thousands of jobs.
JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) has called on mining companies to work with government and review plans to cut thousands of jobs.
The ruling party on Monday said this will only worsen the economy which is already struggling.
On Friday, platinum producer Lonmin announced its plans to close some of its Rustenburg operations which will result in at least 6,000 job losses.
Glencore also announced plans to retrench 600 workers at its Optimum Coal Mines subsidiary.
ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe said, "Even a high unemployment economy you reduce big numbers, you're not resolving the problem you're deepening the crisis. That is our view. Companies like Lonmin that want to reduce big numbers, we think that they should review their plans."
