CAPE TOWN - Provincial and local government officials today launched a new unit to counter gang violence in Cape Town.

Known as the law enforcement stabilisation unit, it will consist of 90 members, and is another initiative aimed at tackling gang violence in the area.

Members of the unit will be deployed to gang-ridden areas across the city.

The City's JP Smith says the unit will focus on areas such as Manenberg, Ottery and Hanover Park on a daily basis.

Mayor Patricia de Lille explains the unit will support existing law enforcement officers, including SAPS officials.

"As much as law enforcement is important, it's not the silver bullet that's going to help us get out of this," says de Lille.

The unit will begin its work immediately.
