Retrenchment on the cards for M&G employees

JOHANNESBURG - The Mail & Guardian newspaper has confirmed that it's currently talking to staff about retrenchments at the paper but says it is part of a structural change that has to take into account where the media industry is going.

However, other sources have confirmed earlier reports that the paper wants to cut 25 jobs.

It's understood that 16 of the jobs that could be cut are involved in the editorial section of the Mail & Guardian.

However, officials won't confirm that saying they're going through a particular process at the moment.

But other newspapers have also had to cut staff, while in the US and Europe many newspapers have shut down altogether, as news content has moved online and people have simply stopped buying papers.
