JOHANNESBURG - Social media users have reacted to Mick Fanning's near-death experience with a great white shark at the J-Bay Open surfing competition in Jeffreys Bay on Sunday.

The surfer (34) was knocked off his board when a shark approached him and broke his leg rope.

In his defence, he was forced to punch and kick the animal, and managed to survive the attack.

Now, it seems seems Fanning's quick escape has turned him into Australia's very own Chuck Norris:

The competition was suspended shortly after the attack.
