JOHANNESBURG - While the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has now taken over the investigation of an accident involving an Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) vehicle, which claimed the life of a three-year-old girl, it's considering adding more charges of murder and attempted murder against the driver.

The officer has not yet been arrested or suspended and it's been three weeks since the crash.

Ipid is still collecting statements.

The police watchdog only got involved in the case this week after hearing about the incident through the media.

It's understood Metro Police failed to report the matter to them.

The toddler was following her cousin to a tuck shop in Vosloorus when she was knocked over by the vehicle, which had allegedly been speeding on its way to a protest.

A pedestrian was also struck a few meters form where the girl died.

Ipid's Grace Langa said, "There needs to be justice, the matter needs to be investigated, the matter has to be tested and we'll see going forward. That person is still on duty. That person is still not arrested."
