JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng residents have been warned to brace for a cold weekend.

The South African Weather Service says a cold front is expected to hit the province tonight bringing rainfall along with it.

Temperatures are expected to reach highs of only 11 degrees celsius on Friday.

Forecaster Lulama Pheme said, "There is a cold front that is going to pass through tonight, we are expecting some showers and thunder showers for the Johannesburg area. That will come with cold conditions after the passage of those showers."

This will be the second freezing weekend in space of a month.

Three weeks ago, there was a significant drop in temperatures as a cold front sweeped in from the west of the countr y.

A cut-off low pressure system sweeped through the province bringing rainfall, scattered thundershowers and strong winds.

The Drakensberg and parts of the Eastern Cape experienced snowfall.
