Telkom retrenchment saga heading to CCMA

JOHANNESBURG - The Telkom retrenchment saga is now expected to move to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) after the Labour Court ordered the company to halt its restructuring and retrenchment processes.

While handing down his ruling on Wednesday, presiding judge David Gush ordered that the matter go to the CCMA within five days.

The restructuring would have seen more than 4,000 Telkom workers lose their jobs.

Gush told the court that the case in which 4,400 workers would be retrenched and a further 3,400 transferred to outsourced companies must be moved to the CCMA to be dealt with rapidly.

Unions representing the employees claim Telkom has not been informing them on important developments regarding the restructuring and say they are worried that the company is not following procedure.

But Telkom's Jacqui O'Sullivan insists numerous meeting were held with unions and the process was transparent.

O'Sullivan says they welcome the decision by the judge to take the matter to the CCMA.

Telkom says although it's disappointed by the ruling it only delays the inevitable.
