JOHANNESBURG - The High Court in Pretoria has declared the decision to award the lottery licence to Ithuba Holdings invalid.

The court has ruled the awarding of the tender was illegal and the licence issue done by Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies has been set aside.

Last year, Gidani asked the court to review the decision to award the lottery licence to Ithuba, but the court ruled its application was not urgent.

Ithuba started trading in June despite the pending court challenge.

Gidani chief executive Bongani Khumalo says they will study the judgment before deciding the next step.

"We will discuss this with our attorneys in order to gain thorough understanding thereof and look at the implications of such a decision, which we regard as momentous."
