CAPE TOWN - Daryl Impey does not need surgery on his fractured collarbone, his mother Ellie says.

He was involved in a huge crash on stage three of the Tour de France yesterday and sustained an injury that saw him pull out of the race.

The Orica Edge rider has returned to his home in Spain where he will begin his recovery.

Impey's mother told EWN Sport her son's injury could have been worse.

"He is already speaking about getting ready for the next race. Obviously he will have a certain amount of recovery time. It's not like having a major operation and then you still have to recover from the operation and its major rehab."

She also added that Impey was understandably upset about not being able to continue participating in the event.

"I did message him last night and all he said was basically, it's very disappointing, he sacrificed a lot to get to the Tour de France and this happens but he said its part of the sport."

Impey made history when he became the first African to wear the iconic yellow jersey during a stage in the 2013 race.
