JOHANNESBURG - North West police are searching for five prisoners who escaped from the Hartbeespoort Dam Police Station holding cells near Brits on Saturday night.

The five suspects had been awaiting trial on various charges of robbery and theft.

Police say it's unclear how they broke out of the holding cells.

Spokesperson Paul Ramaloko says there will be an internal investigation and any officer found in the wrong will be dealt with.

"We aren't sure how they escaped because there was no sign of forceful exit by these suspects but the matter is being investigated."
