JOHANNESBURG - Chile are Copa America champions for 2015.

The hosts beat the favourites Argentina 4-1 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 0-0 after extra time.

Chile's victory brought an end to almost a century of competing in the Copa America without claiming a title.

Chile had previously lost four previous Copa America finals, the last 28 years ago, and went out of the 2014 World Cup at the last 16 stage to Brazil on penalties, but made no mistake this time.

Lionel Messi was the only one to score for his country.

Argentina was seeking its first major trophy in 22 years but after Messi scored with his penalty, a Gonzalo Higuain effort was blazed over the bar and Ever Banega was denied by Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.
