Highlanders Super Rugby champions
The Highlanders stunned thousands of fans with a 21-14 win over the Hurricanes.
JOHANNESBURG - The Highlanders have upset the Hurricanes in the final of Super Rugby to be crowned the 2015 champions.
The team from Dunedin travelled to Wellington and stunned the thousands of fans crammed into the Cake Tin with a 21-14 win over the prematch favourites.
Early penalties from Lima Sopoaga put the Highlanders 6-0 up before a Ma'a Nonu try reduced the deficit to just one point.
The visitors weren't done yet, scoring a try of their own through Elliot Dixon, taking them into the break with a 13-5 advantage.
Beauden Barrett kicked a penalty early in the second half, but that was quickly nullified by another Highlanders try, this time through Waisake Naholo taking them ten points clear.
Two further penalties from Barrett reduced the deficit to just four heading into the final ten minutes of the match.
Then, with tension at an all time high, a drop goal from Marty Banks with just two minutes on the clock extended their lead to seven.
Moments later Jaco Peyper blew the whistle as the Highlanders wrapped up a famous victory in Wellington.
