CAPE TOWN - The University of Cape Town's Student Representative Council (SRC) is investigating alleged homophobic comments by its acting president.

Zizipho Pae wrote "We are institutionalising and normalising sin. May God have mercy on us."

The SRC's Greg Keal says Pae has refused to delete the post in which she appears to be criticizing the US Supreme Court's ruling on Friday, legalising gay marriage across the country.

Keal says her comments have caused outrage among many students.

"The SRC doesn't agree with the views that were expressed on that Facebook status and we completely believe equality is a priority."
