CAPE TOWN - A father charged with beating his two-year-old daughter to death will remain behind bars until his next court appearance in three weeks' time.

Christopher Williams made his first appearance in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Monday.

The court on Monday heard how Williams allegedly beat his two-year-old daughter for about six hours at his Hanover Park home.

He's been charged with murder and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The alleged assault took place on 18 June after the 32-year-old allegedly had an argument with the child's mother.

A post-mortem has revealed the Hanover Park toddler was severely beaten.

Zoe Petersen was rushed to the Hanover Park Day Hospital the next day but was declared dead on arrival.

It is alleged Williams fled after the assault but was arrested in Athlone on Thursday night after police received a tip-off.

Williams has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance on 21 July.
