CAPE TOWN - A father charged with beating to death his two-year-old daughter has made his first appearance in the Athlone Magistrates Court.

Christopher Williams allegedly fled his home after the fatal assault about two weeks ago.

Williams was arrested in Athlone on Thursday night after police received a tip-off.

Williams (32) stood in the dock with his head bowed.

He's been charged with murder and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

It's alleged he beat his two-year-old daughter for about six hours on 18 June following an argument with her mother.
