CAPE TOWN - A University of Cape Town student may need to undergo surgery after being attacked by a shark.

Dylan Reddering was bitten by a shark while surfing in Plettenberg Bay on Friday and is recovering in a Knysna Hospital.

The 23-year-old suffered deep lacerations and bite marks on the right side of his body, ribs, buttocks and leg.

Reddering was rescued from the water by fellow surfers.

The National Sea Rescue Institute's Craig Lambinon said, "He was stabilised in hospital but was transported to another hospital where we suspect he may need some surgery but it does appear all bite marks missed major organs."
