Man arrested for allegedly beating his child (2) to death

CAPE TOWN - A tip-off has led to the arrest of a father who allegedly beat his two-year-old daughter to death.

The child was killed in Hanover Park a week ago.

A post mortem shows the girl died from severe injuries.

The police's Andre Traut said, "Last night at about 8pm a 32-year-old man, who was thought of allege murder of his two-year-old murder, was arrested in an informal settlement in Athlone."

The circumstances around the incident are still unclear.

Police say her father allegedly fled the scene following the fatal assault.

The suspect is expected to appear in court next week.

Earlier today, Social Development MEC Albert Fritz said action will be taken against anyone who withheld information pertaining to this case.

"We also want to find out exactly what happened to this child. In this regard we're making all our investigations together with the NGO tasked with working with this girl."
