HARARE - A man in Zimbabwe has been fined for telling a ruling party's Member of Parliament (MP) to 'voetsek' during a discussion on WhatsApp.

Information Minister Jonathan Moyo directed exactly the same word to a critic on Twitter last month but he wasn't addressing a prominent war veteran.

Tatenda Machingauta (29) of Harare was lucky to get off with a $100 fine.

NewsDay is reporting that a state prosecutor wanted him sentenced to jail for telling prominent war veteran and Zanu-PF MP Joseph Chinotimba to 'voetsek' on WhatsApp last week.

The prosecutor said insults on social media could incite violence.

But critics say Moyo used the same word on Twitter last month.

Former Education Minister David Coltart says if you go into politics you need a thick skin and you shouldn't be running to the police when people criticise you.
