JOHANNESBURG - Supermarket chain Spar has denied trying to poke fun at PJ Power's struggle to recover from alcohol addiction.

The musician says she is angry at an alcohol advertisement using her name without her permission.

The retailer says its theme for its June campaign was intended to come across in a light-hearted manner.

Spar has defended its latest advertisement saying it was well within its rights to run with the campaign as this was part of a larger pyjama party theme.

The advert includes the tag line "Grab a Drink and Show off Those PJ Powers"

The chain says the use of the word PJ is consistent with the loose understanding of the word pyjamas.

The recovering alcoholic says she had to walk into a liquor store for the first time in nearly six years after being alerted to the campaign.
