It’s unclear what caused the blaze but firefighters have been able to extinguish it.
JOHANNESBURG - Two children have been killed after a building caught fire on Koch Street in the Johannesburg CBD.
It's unclear what caused the blaze but firefighters have been able to extinguish it.
EmergiMed's Jonathan van Wyk said, "We arrived to find a second floor flat was on fire. It turned out it was a crèche and two children were declared deceased at the scene."
Dozens of onlookers are stood in shock after the fire broke out, while one of the deceased children's mother crouched on the tarred road with a blanket over her head sobbing uncontrollably.
Firefighters battled with the blaze for about three hours and managed to save the lives of the other children and their teachers.
They were earlier searching for children and other people who may still be trapped inside the building, but managed to clear the scene.
Johannesburg emergency services Robert Mulaudzi said, "The cause of the fire is still unknown but it's being investigated."
