JOHANNESBURG - Police have launched a manhunt for two suspects who gunned down a protection services officer and wounded his girlfriend in Stinkwater in Temba near Hammanskraal on Friday.

It's understood 36-year-old constable Sello Machete was sitting in his car with his girlfriend when they were approached by the unknown suspects.

The police's Mack Mngomezulu says the suspects stole Machete's service pistol and his car which was found abandoned a few kilometers from the murder scene.

Mngomezulu has appealed with anyone any information to come forward.

"He was shot several times and the girlfriend was also injured. He died on the scene and the girlfriend was rushed to the nearest local hospital."

Meanwhile, Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko said last month that 86 police officers lost their lives during the past financial year.

He said this figure represents a nearly 12 percent increase in the number of police deaths compared to the year before.

The minister said 35 on duty and 51 off duty police officers were killed last year.
