CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Community Safety MEC Dan Plato on Friday said he had received several complaints from Bredasdorp mothers who were worried about their underage daughters living with the older men they were dating.

Plato and several religious leaders hosted a series of workshops in Bredasdorp on Friday.

It formed part of a series of interventions the department planned for the Overberg town, to try to address gender-based violence in the community.

Plato said he was shocked by what he has been told so far.

"The relationship with young girls and older men is major problem. I've also received letters to that, in fact pleas from mother because the young girls 14, 15 and 16-years-old living with men 30 to 40+ years old. That is a major issue."

Earlier this month, 14-year-old Elna Japhta's body was found stuffed underneath a bed in the house she was sharing with her 27-year-old boyfriend.

He has since been arrested and will make another court appearance in August.
