JOHANNESBURG - The body of a newborn baby boy has been found dumped in a waste bag near Berea in central Johannesburg.

Paramedics on Thursday said a group of waste collectors had been working along Joe Slovo Drive when they made the grim discovery.

Netcare 911's Santi Steinmann said, "Upon assessment of the little baby boy paramedics found that the boy was already deceased and there was nothing that could be done. Exact details surrounding the baby are currently being investigated by the police."

Last month a case of child abandonment was opened after a baby was found in Mitchell's Plain.

The little girl was discovered on a field in Woodlands wrapped in blankets with a bag of baby clothes and a milk bottle was placed next to her.

She was said to be in good health.
