Open Stellenbosch wants re-establishment of transformation centre
Open Stellenbosch says it wants the university to meet them halfway in promoting transformation on campus.
CAPE TOWN - Student activist group Open Stellenbosch is calling for the re-establishment of a transformation centre at Stellenbosch University.
On Tuesday the group hosted its first student congress where issues around transformation were discussed.
Open Stellenbosch had invited student groups from across the country to take part in the special student congress to mark Youth Day.
Open Stellenbosch's Mohammad Shabangu says the group wants the university's management to meet them halfway in promoting transformation on campus.
Shabangu says they want the university management to address real issues, one of which is language policy.
"The second have to deal with re-establishing a centre for transformation and the third has to deal with general curriculum change.
Former Dean of Studenta Llewelyn MacMaster, who was part of the centre for inclusivity at Stellenbosch, says a formal structure will serve as a driving force for transformation.
"I do not necessarily disagree with the stance taken by the university that this transformation should be embedded into the culture, but you still need drivers."
The group has called on universities across the country to join them in spurring on transformation at their institutions.
