JOHANNESBURG - Thousands of school pupils from across Gauteng have gathered in Soweto for a Youth Day march on Monday held by the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE).

As many as 3,000 pupils gathered at Mofolo Park this morning for a parade led by education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.

The GDE says it's important for young South Africans to remember those who fought for better education during apartheid.

There's singing and dancing as Soweto residents take pictures and videos of the massive crowd of school children, young drum majorettes and scouts dressed in their uniforms

Some local children are also leaving their homes to join the march as the procession moves from Mofolo to the Hector Pietersen Memorial in Orlando.

The GDE says today's event marks a revival of the fight for quality education for South African children.

Lesufi has urged teachers and parents to play their role as government works to transform the state of education in the province.
