‘MTN’s refusal to meet demands is a call for another strike’

MTN postponed its annual marathon at the weekend due to security concerns around the strike.

JOHANNESBURG - The Communication Workers Union (CWU) on Monday said talks with service provider MTN would only result in another protest if the union's demands were not met.

A meeting, which was scheduled for Monday, was moved to the end of the week.

The two parties failed to reach an agreement over wage hikes with workers demanding a reviewed bonus of 12 percent and a 10 percent salary increase.

MTN postponed its annual marathon at the weekend due to security concerns around the strike.

The union's Clyde Mervin said, "We are ready for Friday. Workers saying we must fight for the issues they want and act to resolve the issues but in terms of resolving it, it must be a win-win situation for both parties."

MTN has dismissed at least 300 employees from stakeholder companies since the start of the strike last month.

Last week MTN said it was baffled by continued threats from members of the CWU who have been on strike since last May.

MTN accused striking staff of assaulting four of its employees.

Although nearly 97 percent of its staff is back at work, MTN said there were still a few isolated incidents of violence by union members.
