Former Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale has been appointed by Fifa to lead a monitoring committee to oversee the development of football in Palestine.

Sexwale has also been tasked with monitoring the mending of relations between the Israeli and Palestinian football federations.

Ahead of the 65th FIFA Congress in Zurich in May, the Palestinian Football Association vowed to request that the Israel Football Association be suspended from the world football governing.

Despite last-ditch attempts at mediation by world football officials, the Palestinian delegation insisted it would push for a vote unless Israel expels five teams based in illegal Israeli settlements from its football league.

At the Fifa Congress, the Palestinian Football Association withdrew its demand to have the Israeli federation suspended, committing to a peaceful resolution.

The committee, which Sexwale will lead, will work closely with the two associations to address issues raised by the Palestinian federation.
