Cop arrested for demanding bribe from domestic violence suspect

CAPE TOWN - A police officer has been arrested for corruption and extortion.

It's alleged the constable, who is based the Nyanga Police Station, demanded a bribe from a domestic violence suspect to make his case disappear.

He was allegedly paid R500 by the man but was reported to the Hawks when he tried to extort more money from him.

The police's Frederick Van Wyk said, "The police officer allegedly arrested the suspect but instead demanded R2,000 from him, where after he was released. The suspect didn't give the full amount requested and offered to pay the money at a later date, but instead reported the matter."
