CAPE TOWN - Three of the four men allegedly involved in a deadly foiled robbery in Surrey Estate have appeared in court.

A group of men stormed the Primrose Markette store at the Engen filling station on Monday night.

Three of them were killed in a shootout with police.

A civilian and a police officer were also wounded during the shooting.

Three of the accused appeared briefly in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Thursday morning.

Additional police officers were in court to keep an eye on the trio as they stood in the dock.

A fourth suspect who was also shot by police is currently under guard at Groote Schuur Hospital.

The court has received a medical certificate confirming the 34-year-old man will undergo surgery.

The matter has been postponed to 17 June to allow the state time to gather additional information.
