Penile transplant man set to become a father
The girlfriend of the world's first penile transplant is four months pregnant.
CAPE TOWN - The girlfriend of the recipient of the world's first penile transplant is pregnant.
Doctor Andre van der Merwe performed the ground breaking operation at Tygerberg Hospital in December.
Van der Merwe gave a lecture on the success of the operation at Stellenbosch University this afternoon.
He said they initially had no financial backing, no donors and many critics, but was happy to hear the recipient's girlfriend is now four months pregnant
The doctor saw the recipient yesterday and reports his patient is confident and sexually active.
The marathon nine-hour operation was the second time that this type of procedure was attempted, but the first time in history that a successful long-term result has been achieved.
Three years ago the 21-year-old recipient's penis had to be amputated in order to save his life when he developed severe complications after a traditional circumcision.
Van der Merwe says he is looking forward to performing more penile transplants.
