Hundreds of dolphins delight boaters off Cape Town
An incredible video shows the moment a rubber duck encountered a massive super pod of dolphins off Cape Town.
CAPE TOWN - For most South Africans catching a glimpse of a dolphin up close is a rare and exhilarating sight. But imagine being surrounded by hundreds or even thousands.
This is what happened to a lucky group of boaters recently, who managed to capture the incredible experience shared it on YouTube.
Cape Town resident Robbie Ragless, who recorded the footage on Friday 5 June, was off Robben Island on a fishing trip - a sport he has only recently taken up.
"We go fishing quite often in that area… we often see a lot of wildlife out there but nothing as big as this…" he told Eyewitness News on Wednesday.
Ragless said the pod appeared out of nowhere around midday.
"And then we just saw the frenzy on the horizon and didn't know it was coming straight for us and caught ourselves right in the middle of it, which was quite cool."
The breath-taking numbers made it difficult to count, dazzling everyone on board.
"I didn't even know - we thought there were maybe a thousand, but there could have been more of them," he added.
The delighted fishermen spent around five minutes with the pod.
Ragless added that they were treated to a whale sighting on the very same day, in what proved to be a very worthwhile outing.
