JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Basic Education says while it has made significant gains in the rollout of school infrastructure, its biggest challenge is the eradication of pit toilets.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga says her department will prioritise the rollout of basic services such as water, electricity and sanitation in schools.

She says there is also a major backlog in classrooms, libraries and furniture.

"We also acknowledge that there are major problems. In addition to what we have agreed, we still need another programme to address the backlogs."
