GP, WC & KZN receive clean audits
The Western Cape, Gauteng & KZN are the top-performing provinces when it comes to municipal finances.
CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal are the top-performing provinces when it comes to municipal finances.
Auditor-general Thembekile Kimi Makwetu has released his annual review of municipal audit outcomes, covering 268 municipalities and 57 related entities.
Makwetu says 17 percent of these achieved clean audits in the 2013/2014 financial year, that's up from nine percent the previous year.
He says the improved audit outcomes should be celebrated.
"This is moving in the positive direction."
But he was quick to caution that some were achieved by over reliance on consultants and errors that were corrected during the audit process.
While Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal have the cleanest audits, the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, and the Northern Cape showed some improvement.
The auditor general says financial controls in reporting remain poor in the Free State, Limpopo and North West, where not a single clean audit was achieved.
