CAPE TOWN - The state intends opposing bail in the case against a man accused of murdering his 14-year-old girlfriend in Bredasdorp.

The 27-year-old suspect appeared briefly in the Bredasdorp Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

He was arrested after the body of his girlfriend Elna Japhta was found last weekend.

Her body was found wrapped in a blanket under a bed in the Zweletsha informal settlement on Sunday.

An emotional Eva Japhta sat in tears while her daughter's alleged killer stood meters away from her in the dock.

Prosecutor Stewart van Coppenhagen said the state will be opposing bail.

He added that murder accused will remain in police custody Bredasdorp police station until his next court appearance.

The accused made no eye contact with Eva as he was escorted out the court room by police officers.

He will remain at the Bredasdorp police station's holding cells away from other inmates.

Van Coppenhagen said there was enough evidence to charge him with murder.

The court postponed the case to 8 June.

A Bredasdorp based NGO has asked the community to start playing a greater role in protecting children.

Locals said they were shocked by the murder of a third young girl.

In 2013, 17-year-old Anene Boysen was raped and murdered and earlier this year five-year-old Kayde Williams was killed in the Overberg town.

Community worker Lana O'Neil said, "People like to talk but they don't do anything in this town. We've got the nicest programmes on paper but nothing is done on the ground."

At the same time, the Bredasdorp Community Policing Forum (CPF) said residents were despondent following Japhta's death.

Spokesperson Michael Olivier asked, "What is next? First it was Anene Booysen, what is next? This is the concern of the community."

One Bredasdorp resident said she was worried about her own children's safety following the murder, while community member Minnie Jantjies said she was in shock.

"The community feels very sad and we think it's one of the most disgusting incidents that could have happened."

Earlier this year, Kayde was raped and murdered in Bredasdorp, her body was found on a field shortly after she went missing.
