Upgrades at Pretoria C-Max prison delayed
Govt decided to upgrade the security and the facility following an escape by Annanias Mathe.
JOHANNESBURG - The Correctional Services Department said the completion of upgrades at Pretoria's C-Max prison have been delayed because the contractor who received the tender ran out of money during the project.
The government decided to upgrade the office facilities and security at C-Max following an escape by Annanias Mathe in 2006 and recommendations by the jail commission.
It's believed around R800 million has been spent on upgrades to prisons across the country and the department said three of the facilities are nearly complete.
Acting National Correctional Services Commissioner Zacharia Modise said they are in talks with the contractor.
"We about to finish Vanrhynsdorp, our biggest challenge is C-Max. We are busy with development."
