CAPE TOWN - The mother of murdered 14-year-old Elna Japhta said although her daughter had ran away from home to live with an older man, she was a good child.

Awareness around National Child Protection Week has been magnified by the death of the Bredasdorp girl.

Her body was found under a bed in a shack that she shared with a 27-year-old man in the Zweletsha informal settlement on Sunday.

The man was arrested in connection with her murder soon after the gruesome discovery.

An emotional Epha Japhta said she made her way to the crime scene on Sunday, only a few streets away from her home.

Japhta said she wanted to see her daughter for the last time, but said she was advised not to.

She said her daughter was a good child who kept bad company and she never approved of the relationship she shared with the suspect.

Japhta said her daughter was planning on moving back home days before her death.

The suspect is to appear in the Bredasdorp Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

RESIDENTS DESPONDENT AFTER MURDER

The Bredasdorp Community Policing Forum (CPF) said residents are despondent following Elna's death.

The Bredasdorp CPF's Michael Olivier asked, "What is next? First it was Anene Booysen, what is next? This is the concern of the community."

At the same time, a Bredasdorp resident said she's worried about her own children's safety following the murder.

Community member Minnie Jantjies said she's in shock.

"The community feels very sad and we think it's one of the most disgusting incidences that could of happened."

Earlier this year, five-year-old Kayde Williams was raped and murdered in Bredasdorp.

Her body was found on a field shortly after she went missing.

This came after the brutal sexual assault and killing of 17-year-old Anene Booysen in 2013.
