WC Social Development MEC 'horrified' by Bredasdorp child murder
The body of a 14-year-old girl was found rolled in a blanket and hidden underneath a bed.
CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Social Development MEC says he's horrified by the murder of yet another Bredasdorp teenager at the start of child protection week.
14-year-old girl Elna Japhta was found rolled in a blanket and hidden underneath a bed in the Zweletsha informal settlement yesterday.
Provincial social development MEC Albert Fritz says a 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with her killing.
"We will find out more information about it, but I have to say during this period when we are supposed to protect our children and another child died in the area that's notorious for murders and rapes of children in that area."
A teary-eyed Epha Japhta said her daughter was living with a 27-year-old man who was arrested in connection with her murder.
She said she never approved of the relationship.
She said her daughter had agreed to move back home last week Monday, but never pitched.
"I said she should come home, bring her clothes and come home. She told me 'yes, mommy.'"
Japhta said the 27-year-old suspect was a bad influence on her daughter. He is expected to appear in the Bredasdorp Magistrates Court tomorrow.
The attack comes months after the rape and murder of five year old Kayde Williams.
17-year-old Anene Booysen was also sexually assaulted and killed in the town in 2013.
The Bredasdorp Community Policing forum claims the murdered girl was in a relationship with the 27-year-old man arrested for her murder.
The forum's Michael Olivier said, "During the day her boyfriend was arrested. It is very traumatic for our community as in two years three daughters were taken out of our community in such a way."
